WHO SAYS FINE ART CAN'T BE FUN?
And Why Are DM Weil's Paintings Selling
Like Mad In The Middle Of A Down Market?

By Penelope Rothschild

If you had spent $3,000 for a DM Weil original in early 2008, you could probably turn it around for $6,000 or more on the secondary market today. Compare that investment to just about any stock held over the same period, and it's easy to see why DM Weil is the darling of the abstract art world.

DM Weil's bold, colorful, and deceptively complex paintings have been drawing raves from both novice and experienced collectors.

Recently I visited DM Weil at Gallery 721, the impressive 3,500 square foot loft that serves as both her exhibition hall and painting studio. We sat down for a chat on the exquisite Eileen Gray 1929 Monte Carlo red sofa that sits near the center of the gallery.

PR: SO HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE AN OVERNIGHT SENSATION?

DMW: The response to my work has been incredibly gratifying, but somewhat overwhelming. An art curator contacted me and said she wanted to purchase one of my larger works for a room in which a Picasso print was already hanging. I didn't even know what to say.

PR: YOUR PAINTINGS ARE MUCH MORE COLORFUL THAN MOST MODERN ABSTRACTS. WHAT GIVES YOU THE CONFIDENCE TO BUCK THE TREND?

DMW: I'm not a classically trained painter, which is a blessing in many ways. I never have to worry about what rules I might be breaking or whether I'm bucking a trend. This allows me to paint with complete abandon, and to attempt things other painters might be hesitant to try.

PR: YOUR WORK IS VERY MUSICAL.

DMW: I hear that a lot. It's funny, because in sixth grade I was offered a chance to be in either the art talent class or the music talent class, but I was forced to choose one or the other. I chose music, which ultimately led to my first career as a singer/songwriter. But I always felt the burning desire to paint, which wasn't satisfied until I built my first painting studio in 2003.

PR: WHAT'S YOUR THEORY ON WHY YOUR PAINTINGS ARE SELLING SO WELL AND INCREASING IN VALUE SO QUICKLY IN THE MIDDLE OF A RECESSION?

DMW: I think we all find the money for things that give us joy. So many people buy my pieces who never bought an original painting before in their life. I think my work is accessible. People seem to have a lot of fun with my paintings, and they seem to discover something new every time they look at one.

DM Weil's originals are currently selling for between $1,000 and $6,000. Prints start at $30. You can view DM Weil's work at the Gallery 721 website. Private showings are available by appointment only by calling 718-450-8412.
